…Updated for 2019…
This article was originally written in November and mentions Christmas cakes and hampers for dogs. Although it’s a little early for Christmas 2019 (although that depends when you’re reading this) we’ve left those product in as they will doubtless appear again near the time.
But it’s never too early for a Doggy Birthday Cake!
When it’s your best friend’s birthday, you’ll want a celebration. After all, in dog years they only get one birthday every seven years! How’d you like that! 🙁
As you probably know, a lot of human food is not healthy for dogs and some can be poisonous so don’t spoil their happy day with a human cream cake – give your dog a cake they will enjoy every bit as much that is also healthy for them.
And there is a lot of choice.
Here we pick our top dog birthday cakes, packs and hampers that are yummy, healthy and fun.
Dog birthday cakes in the UK
Because cakes need to fresh, no one company can deliver cakes across the globe so here we are looking only at cakes available in the UK.
Pet Presents Dog birthday cake gift hamper
If you really want to spoil your dog, this is our top pick. They’ll think all their birthdays have come at once! At least the last seven years’ worth! 🙂
Here’s what’s in the hamper:
- Birthday cake from the Barking Bakery
- Cheese flavoured popcorn from the Barking Bakery
- Woof & Brew Bottom Sniffer Dog Beer
- Alfie & Molly’s Venison Chewies
- Rope Stick
- Double Knotted Ragger
- Tennis Style Ball
- Lily’s Kitchen Snack Bars
- Beco Poop Bags
- A selection of dog-friendly chews
- Pet Presents Storage Box
The Barking Bakery – as you might expect from the name – specialises in food for dogs. The birthday cake is made with low fat and low sugar ingredients and topped with yoghurt-based icing. It looks absolutely fantastic.
The cake uses carob icing (as our chocolate is dangerous for dogs) with white paw prints. Each cake comes with a candle (don’t try to eat this!) and a tube of icing so you can write your dog’s name on the cake.
You need to order a few days in advance as the cakes are freshly made.
The Pet Presents kennel-shaped box can be used to store small toys and treats – if there are any left.
Dog beer? Really?
In case you’re wondering, the Woof & Brew ‘beer’ is non-alcoholic.
You probably know you should not give any kind of alcohol to your dog – or any pet! It can cause a whole range of health problems and can be toxic even in small quantities so please just don’t do it.
The Woof & Brew Bottom Sniffer Dog Beer in the hamper is not, apparently, just a tasty treat. Here’s what they say about it:
The average dog’s nose is anywhere between 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours. Sniffing each other’s bottoms is more than just a doggy hello. They are able to sense emotional status, gender and diet of the other dogs.
Bottom Sniffer beer creates real tail swagger, giving your dog the status and respect they deserve from their doggy peers when being bottom sniffed!
Well, who can say if that’s true or not? But if you give some to your dog, see what happens next time they meet their friends. And please let us know in the Comments below!
This is a one-size-fits-all dog hamper so don’t let smaller dogs scoff all the cake and treats at once or you’ll both regret it.
Do be aware that the toys are not designed for heavy chewing. You probably know your dog’s chewing habits and buy toys accordingly. If your dog is a heavy chewer you may have to watch them with some of the toys.
Dog hamper buyer beware
One thing to watch out for is the price! Prices can vary for many reasons and you can easily check the current price by clicking on the link so I prefer not to quote exact prices here.
Sometimes these hampers may be in short supply and you may find an alternative supplier trying to take advantage of (some may say exploit) the situation by listing at an inflated price.
At the time of writing, the hamper was listed by one supplier at over twioce the normal price!
This practise is not unique to this product as it happens across several Amazon product ranges.
So just check the price y’hear!
You can order the Pet Presents Dog birthday cake gift hamper from Amazon.
Big hampers, small hampers
There are several different sizes of Pet Presents hampers you can check out on Amazon but this one is the most popular and gives you the most bang for your buck.
Karen Stone organic dog birthday cakes
If you don’t want a full hamper but just a cake, our top pick dog birthday cake comes from specialist baker Karen Stone in Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, Scotland.
Karen produces custom-made organic dog birthday cakes which are also vegan. They are, in fact, should you wish to share in your furry friend’s celebration, both dog- and human-friendly.
All ingredients are freshly-sourced. Here’s what goes into a cake:
- Wholemeal flour
- Fresh grated ginger
- Sweet potato
- Coconut oil
- Apple juice
The recipe is based on one for human vegans. Karen has no animal products or by-products in her kitchen so there is no chance of any cross-contamination.
In case you’re wondering, ginger, cinnamon and coconut are fine and even beneficial for your dog.
Karen will create a cake and customise it with your dog’s age, colour, name, and breed.
There are two options for purchase. If you are able to Collect the cake from Bannockburn you can get a larger cake in a proper cake box and save on postage, too.
For the smaller specialist seller, postage charges on fragile items such as cakes are considerable. There is also the necessity to ensure that the parcel is delivered undamaged and on time so Karen also offers a Next-day before 1PM delivery service.
Karen is an eBay seller and has sold well over 1000 doggy cakes with 100% positive ratings – and they were only from the owners! 🙂
Some cakes may seem a little on the expensive side but they are individually made from fresh, organic ingredients and highly customised to suit each individual dog.
You get what you pay for. Karen’s cakes are Quality with a capital Q and get our top dog cake recommendation.
Karen Stone’s dog party pack
This also comes from Karen Stone’s organic, vegan doggy(/human) bakery and it’s a pack of organic dog biscuits.
The ingredients are similar to those used in the cake but include peanut butter:
- Wholemeal flour
- Fresh grated ginger
- Peanut Butter
- Coconut oil
- Apple juice
The biscuits are decorated with carob (sometimes called dog chocolate) which is suitable for dogs and vegans. Other decorations are sugar-based sprinkles.
One pack is intended for one dog so if you’re having a doggy party, you can order however many packs you need. Just make sure the greedy dogs don’t pinch the biscuits from the more careful eaters.
These biscuits are also good for dogs with sensitive stomachs as the ingredients are natural and organic.
Karen Stone’s organic dog muffins
Yes, another pack from Karen Stone and I’m going a little off-piste with these but bear with me. If you and your dog like Kren’s cakes and biscuits you’ll want to try these muffins.
Also, if you’re having a big dog party, these mini cakes will serve a lot of dogs as there are eight in each box.
They are cupcake-sized muffins, again, made from fresh, organic ingredients:
The cakes are decorated with different designs.
Although not quite a birthday cake, look upon these muffins as doggy party food 🙂
Barking Bakery dog celebration cake
Here’s another cake-only option if you don’t want all the toys and extras you get in a hamper.
The Barking Bakery, based in Lancashire, has an enviable reputation for baking doggy treats and its dog celebration cake proves the point. This is also highly recommended and I think any dog would be delighted to be given a Barking Bakery cake.
Just a quick reminder – again in case you missed it – normal human chocolate can be poisonous to dogs.
The cake includes a candle and a tube of icing so you can add your own decorations and write your dog’s name on it.
The cake is around 5″ in diameter which is typical for a dog birthday cake, and would be suitable for a medium-sized dog.
Some customers thought it would be larger, judging from the photo, but the consensus of opinion is that dogs love it! So small and yummy is better than big and so-so. 🙂

Fussy Pups handmade dog birthday cake
Kaye Goodwin is another specialist dog cake and treat baker, based in Cornwall, who also has a shop on eBay. Kaye has worked in the food industry for over 20 years and Fussy Pups is approved by local trading standards and DEFRA.
The cake is a carrot and peanut butter cake, frosted with either peanut butter or a vanilla topping.
You can have your dog’s name and age on it in a range of colours and the decorative organza ribbon comes in different colours, too.
The cake and colourings are 100% natural and it don’t contain any preservatives.
The cake is approx 12cm (4.7″) across and 5cm (2″) deep and comes on a square thin foil cake board.
Because each cake is individually made, Kaye asks for ten days notice in order to prepare and deliver a fresh product. Earlier delivery may be possible if you get in touch first.
The cakes will keep fresh for a few days and can be frozen in the unlikely event that your dog doesn’t scoff it all down at once! 🙂
The cake is advertised as having “All the good stuff with no nasties”, and is made from human-quality ingredients. Kaye tests it herself and her dog, George, so this is another cake you can share with your BFF.
Fussy Pups Christmas hampers
Writing at at this time of year (November), it would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention Fussy Pups’ dog Christmas hampers which come in three sizes.
Like the cake, they are also made from fresh, natural ingredients – “All the good stuff with no nasties” – and are available in three sizes at prices to suit every pocket.
The Cornish Barkery natural dog personalised celebration gift birthday cake
Yes, the name’s a bit of a mouthful – just like the cake! 🙂 – and did you spot ‘Barkery’ in the name? 🙂
Two smileys in the same sentence. I know, I need to get out more!
These cakes are also highly recommended and are excellent value for money.
- Peanut butter (Xylitol-free)
- Fresh carrot
- Wholemeal flour
- Free-range eggs
- Olive oil
Dog-friendly choc chip biscuits are arranged around the edge, and it’s topped with dog-friendly chocolate.
The cake can be personalised with a message of your choice which is piped on with sugar-free icing specially formulated for pet treats.
Good quality, locally-sourced, human-grade ingredients are used and the cakes are free of additives and preservatives.
The Cornish Barkery is also licensed with trading standards as a pet food manufacturer and approved by DEFRA.
The cakes come in five sizes – 2″, 4″, 5″, 6″ and 8″ – so there’s a size to suit your dog’s size and appetite. A 5″ cake would suit a medium-sized dog.
Because the cakes are made fresh and to order, they ask for at least a week’s notice.
The Cornish Barkery also produces a range of dog treats and gift selection doggie bags.
Best birthday cakes for dogs – summary
According to the PDSA there are around 8.9 million dogs in the UK.
Given that number, I thought the market for dog birthday cakes would be larger than it apparently is. If there were greater demand, I assume there’d be more suppliers, particularly on Amazon.
I haven’t listed every dog cake supplier. Some gave little information about their ingredients or production methods while others had poor customer reports.
If you have a favourite supplier who is not on the list, please leave a Comment below.
As it is, most suppliers are small but enthusiastic ‘dog boutique’ bakeries which make the cakes to their own recipes and standards with prices ranging accordingly.
Whatever you select you will get a delicious cake, often with a very personal touch.
